I grew up in west Cork, an area with a proud republican history. I was raised in Gaeltacht Mhuscraí in an Irish speaking family and as the daughter of Seán O Riada, naturally, I was surrounded by his musical legacy.
As someone who lost both parents at a young age, I have faced personal challenges and hardship. It gave me a strong sense of independence and empathy for those who are struggling.
Sinn Féin’s promotion of the Irish language and commitment to Irish unity and equality resonated with me and I am proud to have served as MEP for Ireland South.
I live in Baile Mhuirne with Nicky and our three daughters Cáit (17), Ailsa (15) and Neans (12).
D'fhás mé aníos in Iarthar Chorcaí, áit lena bhaineann stair phoblachtach bródúil. Tógadh mé i nGaeltacht Mhuscraí i dteaghlach le Gaeilge, agus mar iníon Seán O Riada, ba nadúrtha dom bheith tumtha ina oidhreacht cheolmhar.
Mar dhuine a chaill a bheirt thuismitheoir ag aois óg, tháinig mé slán ar go leor anachain agus dushláin I mo shaol.
Thug sé meas dom ar bheith neamhspleách, maraon le mothúchán comhbhá dóibh siúd atá ag streachailt leo ina saolta.
Chuaigh obair Shinn Féin ar chur chun cinn na Gaeilge, maraon lena tiomantas i dtaobh comhionannas agus aontacht na hÉireann, go mór i bhfeidhm orm.
Táim bródúil as a bheith mar Fheisire Eorpach d'Éirinn Theas. Tá cónaí orm i mBaile Mhuirne le Nicky agus lenár dtriúr iníonacha Cáit (17), Ailsa (15) agus Neans (12).
Why I want to be President
Ireland has radically changed since 2011. We are a more caring and inclusive society - a global inspiration for progressive social change. We are beginning a new chapter in our history.
As an MEP I have represented the interest of the Irish people on Brexit, rural and urban communities, arts and culture, climate change, neutrality and economic justice.
As President I will honour the contribution of carers and those working in our public services. I will launch a Presidential initiative to recognise employers paying fair wages. Abroad, I will lead a drive to bring home a generation forced to leave since the economic crash.
I will advocate reform of the Presidency, including the extension of voting rights to citizens in the North and those living abroad. As President I will initiate an inclusive citizens’ conversation on Irish Unity.
Anxiety and insecurity are contributing to a growing mental health crisis. I will focus on the causes – how to organise society so that we support each other rather than allow our quality of life be undermined by inequality and extreme individualism.
I will bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the Presidency.
Cén fáth ar mhaith liom a bheith mar Uachtarán
D'athraigh Éire go mór ó 2011. Tá níos mó comhbhá agus ionchuimsitheacht inár sochaí – is inspioráid dhomhanda d'athrú sóisialta forásach sinn. Táimid ag tosú caibidil nua inár stair.
Mar FPE, léirigh mé guth láidir ar son leas mhuintir na hÉireann ar Brexit, na healaíona, pobail tuaithe agus uirbeacha, athrú aeráide, neodracht agus ceartas eacnamaíoch.
Mar Uachtarán, déanfaidh mé:
• Urraim a dhéanamh ar chúnamh chúramóirí agus orthu siúd atá ag obair inár seirbhísí poiblí
• Tionscnamh Uachtaránachta a sheoladh chun fostóirí a íocann pá cothrom a athaint.
• Togra a thiomáint chun iad siúd chuireadh ar imirce de dheasca an géarchéim eacnamaíoct a thabhairt abhaile.
• Comhrá saoránach chuimsitheach mar gheall ar Aonacht na hÉireann a thosnú.
Tacóidh mé le athchóiriú na hUachtarántachta, síneadh an cearta vótála do shaoránaigh san Tuaisceart agus thar lear san áireamh.
