Clemency Now! 2016 Leonard Peltier Essay Contest Attention students and teachers! The ILPDC is pleased to sponsor an essay contest open to all young people ages 14-18 years of age. DEADLINE Friday, September 30, 2016 WRITING PROMPT “Who is Leonard Peltier and why does he deserve clemency now?” The essay should: ▪ ▪ Provide biographical background specific to Peltier’s tribal identity and role in the American Indian Movement; ▪ ▪ Describe the events that led to Peltier’s arrest; ▪ ▪ Present the facts surrounding the case; ▪ ▪ Reflect on your own thoughts and realizations throughout this process; and ▪ ▪ Suggest how and why Peltier’s freedom is essential to Peltier, the tribal community he is Indigenous to, and as a citizen of humanity.
